Sauna Stone - Test Site showcases the metamorphosis of Helsinki sauna stone in a performative exhibition that merges design and sauna under one roof in Kulttuurisauna. For his graduation project from the Contemporary Design Master’s at Aalto University, Lennart Engels has developed innovative and sustainable materials with sauna stone waste from public saunas in Helsinki.
Over a four week period, Kulttuurisauna evolves into a test site where the materials are actively tested by placing them in various environments. Sculptures and material samples find their way into the sauna, washing spaces, common room and garden to find out where their limits lie. Throughout the event, the installation will continually grow, emphasising the organic nature of the materials’ development process.

Guests are invited to visit the exhibition while bathing in Kulttuurisauna, continuing the dialogue around design through sauna.
